Water Industry Preatretment

PRETREATMENT AND INLET CONTROL

Raw water from lakes and reservoirs is drawn into the plant. This raw water then passes through the screening process as it enters the water treatment plant. Screening removes large contaminants like fish, wood, paper, plastic, etc. from the raw water. If groundwater is used then screening may be not necessary.

SAND FILTRATION

Sand filters provide efficient removal of relatively large suspended particles. In this process, the filter chamber is filled with sand, Water is then supplied to the top of the sand-bed. The relatively large suspended particles get stuck between the sand grains, while the small particles adhere to the surface of the sand grains. In this method, the filter requires regular backwashing and cleaning.

Water Industry Flocculation

COAGULATION, FLOCCULATION AND SEDIMENTATION

Dissolved and suspended particles are present in natural water. These particles have to be removed, as they cause deterioration of water quality by reducing the clarity. To separate suspended and dissolved particles from water, the processes of flocculation and coagulation are used. Post these, the sedimentation is used to remove suspended solid particles from the water, using the effect of gravity. The heavy particles settle at the bottom, where they remain until they are removed.

GAS EXCHANGE AND FILTRATION

Gas exchange is a chemical process that removes bacteria and viruses from the water. Post this process, water is passed through the layer of gravel, sand, and charcoal, which filters the remaining particles. Next, unwanted test, odor, and micropollutants are removed from the drinking water through the process of adsorption.

ION EXCHANGE PROCESS

Ion exchange is a reversible chemical reaction that removes dissolved ions from water and replaces them with similarly charged ions. It is used to remove other dissolved ionic species. The Ion exchange process is commonly referred to as ‘water softening’, and is carried out to reduce calcium and magnesium content.

MEMBRANE FILTRATION

The membrane process includes micro-filtration, nano-filtration, reverse osmosis, etc. The membrane is a thin and porous sheet of material that has the ability to separate contaminants from water, especially when a driving force is applied. This treatment is commonly used in the removal of bacteria, other microorganisms, particulate material, and natural organic material.

STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION

Chlorine is used to kill bacteria and other microorganisms found in water. It can reduce the instances of deadly disease-causing microorganism that are responsible for cholera, typhoid, etc. It is a safe, inexpensive, and easy-to-maintain method. This filtered water is then stored in a tank for further use and transport.
